First Visit of 2014

It’s been a number of cold and snowy months since the last official visit to the track at the end of the 2013 season, and while the calendar may say it’s spring, we haven’t seen many signs of it locally… other than the increasing desire to get “on the track” that’s starting to drive us all crazy!

With that in mind, and today’s more encouraging weather, Paul and I made a  reconnaissance trip out to the track to see how things had fared through the winter.  Everything looked good and the site seems to have been fairly quiet. The big surprise was just how much more “residual winter” was hanging around vs. last year:

While it does look more like a snowmobile track than a karting facility at the moment, a week of warm weather and/or rain should go a long way to getting things thawed out. See you at the track soon!

Florida Winter Tour Race report

Florida Winter Tour Report – Le Circuit Quyon Racing / Margay Racing

The racers from Le Circuit Quyon enjoyed a successful outing at the 2014 edition of the Florida Winter Tour, recently held in Orlando, Florida. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, the Florida Winter Tour is a well organised winter kart racing series established in 1999. In 2013, the series hosted more than 340 drivers from 26 countries, and featured participation from eight reigning and former CIK and Rotax World Champions representing 15 World titles. Recent participants have included F1, Indycar, NASCAR, and Daytona 24 Hour drivers. Needless to say, the competition is fierce, fast, and you guessed it, furious!_DSC6392

Our drivers included William Lalonde in the Briggs LO206 Senior Class and Eric Lefebvre in the Briggs LO206 Masters Class. They were joined by Margay Racing drivers Hunter Fox in the Briggs LO206 Juniors Class and James Froemming in the Briggs LO206 Masters Class.

On Saturday, both William and Eric performed extremely well for Le Circuit Quyon and Margay Racing, placing in third and first places in their respective classes. In the Senior final, William was holding second position behind Red Bull racer Collin Daley Jr (Jamaica) until he was passed by Johnny Flu_DSC6564te (Canada). Flute was able to reign in Daley to take the lead in very close quarters; however, nearing the end of the race, Flute was able to take the lead after an error by Daley. Unfortunately for Daley, both of the top two racers received varying time penalties resulting in a position swap – with Flute crowned the victor. Daley managed to maintain second, while William finished a close third. A great Saturday result from William, who was participating in his first major karting event in two years!

For Eric, it was a day of firsts: he participated in his first Florida Winter Tour; his first international event; and placed first in the final! He and Jason Froemming (USA) of Margay Racing raced neck and neck for a large portion of the race, trading fastest race laps as the final progressed. In the end, Eric finished a tight 1.7 seconds ahead of Froemming in second. John Morris (USA) placed third in his Victory kart, a full 11 seconds off the leaders’ pace.

In the Briggs LO206 Junior Class, Hunter Fox (USA) of Margay Racing had a great day, finishing in second place behind Roman DeAngelis (Canada) of Team Koene USA in his Tony/Kart. Third place in the Briggs Junior category went to Tyler Bouillon (Canada) in his CRG. The top three racers were separated by a large 28 second gap from first to third – Bouillon was on fire!Briggs_Junior_Podium

On Sunday, Le Circuit Quyon racer William Lalonde had another great race. Saturday’s winner Johnny Flute (Canada) jumped out to an early lead, but soon suffered from a mechanical failure which ended his campaign for a double victory over the weekend. His position was quickly taken by Collin Daley Jr in his CRG; however, Chad Campbell (Canada) and William were not about to let him escape to victory without a fight. Both Campbell and William pursued Daley fiercely, but Daley continued to protect his lead. William had Campbell under significant pressure, and after a few laps of battle, was able to usurp Campbell and make his way into second position. As the race wore on, Campbell dropped down the order and third place was taken by Christopher Proietto (Canada) in his Praga kart. William was only a second off of Daley’s bumper, while Proietto was a further three seconds back. Great job William!Briggs_LO206_Senior_Podium

In the Masters category, Margay was represented by only one racer – Jason Froemming (USA) due to Eric Lefebvre not starting the Sunday final. Froemming was able to take the win from a hard charging John Morris.

Meanwhile, Hunter Fox had a great day representing Margay Racing. Hunter eked out an early lead over Tyler Bouillon (Canada) and Logan Cusson (Canada) who were trailing by over two seconds. After a few laps of unsuccessfully trying to track down Hunter, Bouillon and Cusson bump-drafted together to gain valuable seconds and catch up to the leading driver; however, with only a couple of laps to go, the three top racers tangled with each other resulting in Hunter once again eking out a small lead. At the finish line, Hunter managed to retain his well fought first place, closed followed by Bouillon in second and Cusson in third._DSC6574

Le Circuit Quyon and Margay Racing are very pleased with the results achieved by our team of racers. Here’s hoping that 2014 is a successful year for both of our organisations! See you at the track!

2014 OGKC Announcement

LCQ Press Release

November 21, 2013

An arrangement has been concluded that will enhance your club karting experience in the National Capital Region – Le Circuit Quyon (LCQ) is pleased to announce that Mr. Ché Smith, kart racer and owner of NR Kart Store, will be taking over the leadership of the Ottawa-Gatineau Karting Championship (OGKC) into its 2014 season. The OGKC had its inaugural season in 2013, launched in tandem with the creation of the LCQ Kart Club, and expanded throughout the year to have 35+ racers participating in the six-event series. The 2014 edition will be even better, with potential new members already showing interest in participating in this great sport, coinciding with the non-partisan direction of Ché.

Having entered the Canadian karting scene a mere two years ago, Ché has quickly made a name for himself as a knowledgeable and passionate resource for all things related to karting. Over the past two years, Ché has successfully supported drivers that have made it to the podium of the Canadian National Kart Championship – no small feat! A supporting dealer/sponsor at the 2013 OGKC and racing at Lombardy Karting, Ché has been looking at ways of improving the sport’s recognition in the National Capital Region, and making it a better and more enjoyable experience for racing aficionados across the regional clubs – whether veteran racers or newcomers to the sport.

By handing the lead of the OGKC series to Ché, LCQ track owner Mr. Paul Lalonde is confident that the OGKC experience will be enhanced by Ché’s fresh and enthusiastic persona. For the 2014 season, Paul will focus on track operations and continuing infrastructure projects, such as a new timing system and track improvements, while Ché will lead the OGKC series.

Ché Smith – Owner, NR Kart Store and new OGKC Series Organizer

I’m honoured that Paul approached me to be a part of the expanding OGKC series. I have tried to remain on neutral territory over my two years in Canadian karting, working and collaborating with several local clubs. As the new series organizer, my plan is to continue to work with local clubs to develop the best kart racing experience in the National Capital Region. I’m looking forward to putting my personal touches to the series, and have already added a second track to make things more challenging and entertaining for the racers. Briggs & Stratton have facilitated interest in karting by producing an affordable ‘out-of-the-box’ sealed race engine that is easy to maintain and inexpensive to run; we need to do our part to ensure karting remains fast, affordable, fun, safe, and entertaining! My door is always open for those that would like to provide feedback, advice, or guidance – whether it be from racers, teams, or other clubs that may wish to participate in the series. The 2013 OGKC included participation from other Québec karting clubs, and I would like to continue or expand this newly-establish collaboration. I love this sport, and always have. I will do my best to make the 2014 OGKC series a great success and welcome you to join me for the wild ride! No drama. No politics. Just racing!

Paul Lalonde – Owner, Le Circuit Quyon and founder of the OGKC

I’m really enthusiastic about Ché’s involvement in the 2014 OGKC series! Ché will be a great series organizer – keen, intelligent, friendly, and approachable. Being relatively new to the Canadian karting scene, Ché’s fresh perspective on the series will be a breath of fresh air not only for veteran racers, but also for rookies that will be coming out in 2014. I anticipate that next-year’s series will be an amazing success, with more participation, a non-partisan approach, and an expanded track base. In addition, Ché’s role as the new organizer of the series will enable me to: focus on providing you with a challenging, fast, and safe track for you to enjoy your karting experience; work with the racers of the LCQ Racing Team;  as well as expand the LCQ rental kart offer! Please join me in welcoming Mr. Ché Smith into the National Capital Region karting family as the new organizer of the OGKC series!
