Double header Canada cup weekend, Great Success!!

What a fantastic weekend of kart racing! Thanks to all of the racers from le Circuit Quyon Karting Club (LCQKC) and the National Capital Kart Club (NCKC) for contributing to the success of the 3rd Annual Capital Cup at Le Circuit Quyon, and a big thanks to the families and friends of the drivers that turned out to watch the races over the course of the weekend! A fun, fast, and safe weekend was enjoyed by all racers thanks in part to Race Director Terry Dale who managed the track sessions so well over the course of the weekend. I think all will agree that the double-header event went off without a hitch!

Race #3 of the Ottawa-Gatineau Karting Championship (Race #1 of the Capital Cup) was held on Saturday, June 29th, with LCQ proudly hosting over 30 racers. The track configuration for this race was the full-track clockwise circuit, and the classes raced were Novice, Briggs Junior, Briggs Senior, Honda Senior, and Briggs Masters. The track sessions started off under wet and rainy conditions; however, the weather began to clear after the lunch break and the finals were held under mainly dry conditions. It proved very difficult to determine which tires were the right ones to be on during some of the sessions – most racers ventured out onto the track on wets for the practice and qualifying sessions; however, the pre-final and final sessions were harder to judge and some participants optimistically took to the track on slicks! During the pre-finals, the majority of the track was still somewhat damp – although the rain had all but stopped. There were slight periods of drizzle from time to time – just enough to make things harder on the racers! In the mixed and changeable conditions, the results of Race #1 of the Capital Cup were as follows:

Novice: 1st – Ryan Armstrong; 2nd – Dagan Hartmann; 3rd – Emily Conty
Junior: 1st – Alexandre Piché; 2nd – Sebastien Piché; 3rd – Nicholas Miller-Armstrong
Briggs Senior: 1st – Max Landry; 2nd – Charlotte Lalonde; 3rd – Abby Bolton
Honda Heavy: 1st – Lee Williscroft; 2nd – Scott Armstrong
Briggs Masters: 1st – Mike Forget; 2nd – Crawford Kilpatrick; 3rd – Phil Hall

On Saturday evening, a catered dinner was held at LCQ under the banquet tent with over 40 people enjoying meals prepared by Lucho Yabar of Fettuccine’s on Elgin Street, Ottawa. A great time was had by all, with racers, families, and friends enjoying an excellent dinner.

Race #4 of the Ottawa-Gatineau Karting Championship (Race #2 of the Capital Cup) was held on June 30th, with approximately 30 racers participating. The weather on Sunday was a total contrast to Saturday – the races were all held under sunny skies with air temperatures in the mid 20 Celsius range! To add variation to the event, Sunday’s sessions were held in a counter-clockwise direction providing for a completely different racing experience – with a challenging reducing-radius ‘fish hook’ corner at the end of the long back straight. The racing was extremely close and competitive, with a couple of off-track excursions occurring throughout the many race heats; however, the day ended safe and sound with no injuries and only a few minor mishaps! The official classes raced were: Novice, Briggs Junior, Briggs Senior, Honda Senior, and Briggs Masters. The final podium results were as follows:

Novice: 1st – Ryan Armstrong; 2nd – Emily Conty; 3rd – Dagan Hartmann
Junior: 1st – Alexandre Piché; 2nd – Sebastien Piché; 3rd – Anthony Conty
Briggs Senior: 1st – Charlotte Lalonde; 2nd – Abby Bolton; 3rd – Max Landry
Honda Heavy: 1st – Sylvain Coulombe; 2nd – Lee Williscroft; 3rd – Scott Armstrong
Briggs Masters: 1st – Jeremie Verner-Filion; 2nd – Jacques Larose; 3rd – Mike Forget

The overall 2013 Capital Cup Champions (most points over the full weekend) by class were:

Novice: Ryan Armstrong
Junior: Alexandre Piché
Briggs Senior: Max Landry
Honda Heavy: Lee Williscroft
Briggs Masters: Mike Forget
